Jack Nitzsche was born in Chicago in 1937. His father was of Czech descent while his mother was a Cherokee Indian. The family moved to Detroit, where jack grew up learning multiple instruments such as guitar, piano, and harmonica. Jack left for Los Angeles to make a career in music in the early 1960s and took up odd jobs as a session musician. Jack emerged as an influential force in the California music scene from the late 1950s to the early 1980s, working alongside some of the industry's biggest names, such as Neil Young, Rolling Stones, The Monkees, and Elvis Costello.
Jack’s music genre can best be described as a mix of rock, blues, and country. Although he excelled in all music genres, Jack is most famously known for his outstanding contributions to films. His arrangements and orchestration are best illustrated in the soundtrack of The Exorcist, which he won an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1973. Jack is also known for his brilliant work on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest soundtrack, which produced one of the greatest film scores in Hollywood.
Still, arguably, Jack’s best song of all time was the hauntingly beautiful Needles and Pins, which he co-wrote with Sonny Bono for the Shirelles in 1964. The song was later covered by the Searchers, who famously topped the UK charts with it.
