Cleo Brown was born on 11th June, 1909 in Mississippi. She inherited her passion for music from her mother who was also a pianist, but unfortunately passed away when Cleo was only five years old. However, the little girl was determined to pursue her dreams of becoming a musician and started playing piano at an early age. Her talent was quickly recognized, and by the time she was in her early teens, she was already performing live on radio nightclubs.
In 1935, Cleo Brown recorded her debut record, The Stuff is Here with Decca Records. Although her recording career was short-lived, she recorded a few pieces which remain popular among music lovers worldwide. Some of her best tracks include When, You’re Driving Me Crazy, and Lonesome and sorry. Her musical style was influenced by jazz, blues, boogie-woogie, and swing genres, and she became known for her upbeat tempo, and unique vocal abilities.
In addition to her musical talent, Cleo Brown was also an activist. She faced numerous challenges due to her race and gender, however, she never let those obstacles hold her back. In 1937, when she was barred from performing at certain venues because of her race, she participated in a series of protests, and ultimately succeeded in breaking down that barrier for future black musicians.
Cleo Brown’s musical journey reached its peak with her performance at the Lincoln Center in 1980, which was considered one of the greatest concerts in jazz history. Her masterful renditions of Love Me Or Leave Me and You’re Clipn’ Too Close to Me left the audience awestruck and cemented her legacy into the jazz canon.
