Clear by Bomb the Bass: A Deeply Engaging and Innovative Album
Bomb the Bass is a music project that originated in the UK in the late 80s and continued to release albums up to the early 2000s. Their third album, Clear, which was released in 1995, received a lot of attention from music lovers and critics alike. The album provided an eclectic mix of various genres of music, ranging from electronica to rock to trip-hop. In this blog post, we will explore the best songs of the album, its most innovative aspects, and provide a critical review of the overall album.
The album Clear opens with the song Bug Powder Dust, featuring the vocal talents of Justin Warfield. The song's guitar riffs and industrial beats make for an exciting start to the album. Another notable track is Darkheart, imbued with a melancholic tone and layered with atmospheric sounds. The use of the sitar in the song Brain Dead adds a unique touch to the album, showing the diversity of the album's sound.
One of the most innovative elements of Clear is how seamlessly the genre-bending tracks are composed and produced. The album effortlessly merges electronic styles with rock and trip-hop, and the result is a cohesive, fascinating sound. The tracks are not pigeonholed into one genre, and each track presents a fresh sound that doesn't create any stylistic dissonance.
The album's most standout song is Bella Lugosi’s Dead (the tape re-animation). This song transforms Bauhaus’s gothic post-punk classic, first released in 1979, into a brooding industrial trip-hop jam with added beats. Thirty-plus years later, it still remains as one of my favorite Bomb the Bass tracks ever recorded.
While Clear is a solid album, it does not come without its flaws. The album doesn't have a particular focus, and as a result, it can feel inconsistent at times. Some songs are decidedly better than others, and while the album is certainly creative, it can feel like a kitchen sink of ideas thrown together rather than a purposeful collection of them.
Clear is a unique and experimental project that highlights Bomb the Bass's talent for fusing different genres of music effortlessly. While the album has its flaws, it provides a fascinating listening experience that should not be missed by any music lover. Clear is a shining example of the many innovations of its time and continues to be an influential album for many aspiring musicians today. Overall, it's a highly recommended album that should be on the top of every music lover's playlist.
