Evanescence: An Introduction to the American Rock Band
Founded in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995 by singer and musician Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody, Evanescence is a rock band that has captivated audiences around the world. After releasing independent EPs as a duo in the late 90s and a demo CD, the band debuted their first studio album, Fallen, on Wind-up Records in 2003. Propelled by hit singles like Bring Me to Life and My Immortal, Fallen sold over four million copies in the US by January 2004 and earned the band two Grammy Awards out of six nominations.
Evanescence went on to release their second studio album, The Open Door, in 2006. Co-composed by Lee and guitarist Terry Balsamo, the album received a Grammy nomination and has sold more than six million copies worldwide. Following a hiatus, the band returned to the scene in 2015 and resumed touring. In 2017, they released their fourth album, Synthesis, featuring orchestral and electronica arrangements of their previous material with two new songs. Their fifth album, The Bitter Truth, was released in 2021.
Evanescence's sound is diverse, blending various styles including classical, alternative, heavy metal, symphonic rock, industrial, and electronica, driven by Lee's introspective songwriting. Despite several lineup changes, Lee has been the constant member since the band's inception, currently joined by guitarist Tim McCord, guitarist Troy McLawhorn, drummer Will Hunt, and bassist Emma Anzai.
In addition to two Grammy Awards, Evanescence has garnered several other accolades, including three Loudwire Music Awards, a Kerrang! Award, a Revolver Golden Gods Music Award, a Brit Award nomination, three American Music Award nominations, and five MTV Video Music Award nominations.
